Here’s one of our employee’s career development journeys...

Gavin Fox-Smith, Managing Director, ANZ

I first started my career at JJM in 1997 as a Regional Business Director responsible for the company’s account with Health Care of Australia, the precursor of Ramsay. After three years in this role, I accepted the role of Project Director based in the JJM office in Singapore. In this role I was responsible for Customer Focus Organisation, a regional company initiative looking at delivering excellence in customer service. This was one of the first One-to-Win regional initiatives – One-to-Win being an internal, regional program aimed at delivering process excellence. After 18 months in this role I moved back to Sydney as JJM’s Regional Business Director and National Account Manager for Ramsay. Two years later I was promoted to Senior Regional Business Director for NSW and working across the Ethicon business and Cordis franchises. In 2006 JJM underwent a reorganisation along franchise lines and I took a position as Director of Marketing for the Ethicon businesses, and a member of the Ethicon businesses and New Zealand leadership teams. In mid 2007 I took a role as Director of Marketing for DePuy and relocated to Melbourne and in January 2009 I accepted the role of General Manager for Ethicon in Sydney. In February 2012 I was appointed the Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson Medical in Australia and New Zealand, a very proud moment for me.

So as you can see, my career roles at JJM have been varied. Alongside these I have had great opportunities to undertake a number of training and development programs. These have included programs such as The Benevolent Society Sydney Leadership Program, the Kelloggs School of Business Marketing Strategy course in Chicago, the Johnson & Johnson Sales and Marketing program in New Jersey and numerous "Building the Future" programs held by Johnson & Johnson Medical in Asia-Pacific. I was also selected for the DePuy Advanced Leadership Development Program – only 24 people were selected from DePuy globally to attend this program.

I believe the best things about working for JJM are the fundamental values and principles under which the people in the company operate. I personally feel that Our Credo is very important and I have used this as a guide many times in my business career. Our leaders and the talented individuals that we have make it an impressive company. I have been fortunate to lead people in the organisation and I have seen firsthand how this company reacts both in good and bad times. As a leader I have been empowered to help my employees through difficult times. It is a company that cares and has a dignity and sensibility that is second to none.

Ultimately though, the greatest thing about my role is that we are a company that is making a difference to people’s lives – we are not just out there selling a product. It’s incredible to think of the number of patients we touch everyday through our products.
